Leaky pipes, busted faucets, cracks spewing water - water damage can be disastrous! Not only can it wreck the wall behind your sink or the flooring under your toilet, if it is left uncured it can start to mold your entire house.
Signs of Water Damage:
Visible signs of water damage include warped or bubbled paint, mold growing on the baseboards/flooring/walls, and stained or buckled walls. Smelling mold or must around the house is also a bad signal, meaning that water damage is most likely present.
How Does It Happen:
Most commonly, water damage in your home is due to plumbing leaks, generally in rusted pipes. Be sure to frequently replace and fully tighten your water pipes! Change in temperature can cause the pipes to expand and shrink, and some pipes expand so fast they burst, so during the heat of the changing seasons be sure to check on them! Overflowing gutters are another issue. If the water doesn’t have a place to drain then the gutter will slowly overflow right next to your walls causing the wood to become wet and moldy. Toilets are notorious for leaking. If the pipe becomes clogged with solid waste, the water cannot drain and will slowly back up, all the waste coming with it - gross, right?
A quick Test:
Although most signs of water damage can be pretty obvious, catching leaks inside of the walls early on can be very challenging! An efficient test to check if you have an unknown leak in the house is to not use any applications that require water (toilet, dishwasher, faucets) for three hours. Check the water usage meter before and after this experiment. If the numbers have gone up then there is a leak somewhere in your house that you don’t know about which you should consider getting professionally checked out.
